Ending Toxic Charity: A Hand Up not a Handout: The easy approach in helping those down and out is giving a handout in the form a few bucks or pocket change, food, some clothes, and temporary shelter. Years ago, after hearing about a panhandler garnering over $750,000 on the streets of Manhattan in one year, that is when I stopped handing out money willy-nilly. Giving without accountability is toxic, poisoning dignity and destroying self-respect. It is not compassion but rather demoralizing pity.
Permanently solving this problem is done by advising, training, and teaching effective life skills that incorporate lessons on overcoming emotional and character disorders. Many suffer from a wounded spirit from past trauma and defilements from sin and abuse. God can heal these issues.
